One day, Benny's skills are put to the test when he hits a long ball into Mr. Mertle's yard. Mr. Mertle is a grumpy old man who doesn't like kids and his dog, better known as "the Beast" doesn't seem to either. Benny is determined to get his ball back, but the Beast is equally determined to keep it.
Benny goes over the fence and manages to grab his ball, but the dog breaks his chain and leaps over the fence, and starts chasing him. He eventually winds up back in Mr. Mertle's yard and the Beast crashes through the fence to get to him. Surprisingly, the dog, Hercules, is not mean after all, and neither is Mr. Mertle. In fact, they both turn out to be pretty cool.
Benny from Sandlot learns a valuable lesson about not judging people (or dogs) by their appearance, and he gains two new friends in the process. He also becomes a better baseball player from his experience, and he helps lead the Sandlot team to victory in the championship game.
